I’ve had dozens of dreams that have suggested the plot of and scenes in a novel that I eventually wrote. My first published novel, THE MERI (book one of a trilogy) was the result of a dream I shamelessly manipulated to make the characters repeat a scene so I could write it down with an imaginary pad & pencil, and a phrase from a Robert Silverberg Gilgamesh story. The trilogy is a fantasy world exploration of the progressive revelation of religion that includes paraphrased excerpts from the world’s Holy Books, including the Baha’i writings. Fiction, like music, is a path to allow people consider new ideas in a new context–ideas they might never encounter or consider otherwise. Since then I’ve literally dreamed up quite a few stories.

I can’t say I’ve ever had a dream that prompted me to act in a manner that was different from what I would have done anyway. I do like your idea of The Báb’s words as a goodnight prayer for children. I will recommend this for my grandchildren!

Thank you for this insightful essay! I am also recovering from childhood trauma, and moved out of the city (Vancouver) to live a quiet rural life, also because I felt God calling me. I have had a complicated relationship with sleep and suffered sleep paralysis for years – is there anything in the writings about that? The experiences feel very… demonic
