to clarify, giving $5 to a homeless person isn’t likely to do anything to change their life, but initiatives like giving $1000 a month for 12 months to single mum’s of color, with no strings attached, can be life-altering. This kind of initiative, pioneered as the Magnolia Mother’s Trust by poverty disrupter Aisha Nyandoro in Jackson Mississippi – see her 2023 TED talk – is an inspiring example alongside the above article’s example of Ms. Engelhorn and others like her.

Robarts https://bahaiteachings.org/wealthy-people-give-voluntarily-to-the-poor/#comment-65945 Sat, 03 Aug 2024 20:52:42 +0000 https://bahaiteachings.org/?p=84829#comment-65945 Interesting how often I hear wealthy friends quote the saying that “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” But teaching a man to fish is useless if he doesn’t get a fishing rod too, or a fishing net, or a fishing boat (and enough gas to run it). At least the research I have read shows that when we give our cash to the poor, a tiny minority may squander it, but the vast majority know exactly how to use it to change their lives and relieve the awful chains of poverty.
