{"id":39765,"date":"2025-12-24T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-12-24T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bahaiteachings.org\/?p=39765"},"modified":"2025-12-18T04:11:58","modified_gmt":"2025-12-18T12:11:58","slug":"recognizing-spirit-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bahaiteachings.org\/recognizing-spirit-season\/","title":{"rendered":"Recognizing the Spirit of the Season"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s the holiday season; Christmas trees laden with beautiful ornaments, streets lined with twinkling lights and the city decorated with color. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am filled with the holiday spirit as different Faiths celebrate this special time of year. As a <a href=\"\/bahai-faith\">Baha\u2019i<\/a>, I believe that all Faiths come from the same Divine source, so there is no need for me to choose just one tradition to enjoy. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-24-font-size\" style=\"font-size:24px;font-weight:normal\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be a Baha\u2019i simply means to love all the world; to love humanity and try to serve it; to<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work for universal peace and universal brotherhood. \u2013 <a href=\"\/abdul-baha\">Abdu\u2019l-Baha<\/a>, quoted by J.E. Esselmont in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/reference.bahai.org\/en\/t\/o\/BNE\/bne-59.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Baha\u2019u\u2019llah and the New Era<\/em>, p. 83<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since I came from a Christian background originally, I still delight in the wonderful traditions of my ancestors. My son goes caroling with friends from his theater group. I play Christmas carols and watch corny Christmas movies. My husband cuts down the perfect Christmas tree from our property and we honor the birth of the baby Jesus with our relatives.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My uncle, a Baha\u2019i from a Jewish background, still holds his family traditions of Hanukkah in his heart. African-American Baha\u2019i friends continue to observe Kwanzaa, and at the New Year, Persian Baha\u2019i friends celebrate traditions from their heritage going back hundreds of years. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Precious Native American Baha\u2019i friends commemorate the Winter Solstice. From<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ancient times, all over the world, people have recognized this important astronomical occurrence and celebrated the successive \u201creturn\u201d of the Sun in a variation of different ways. Old solstice traditions have even influenced the holidays we celebrate now, such as Christmas and Hanukkah.&nbsp;At the solstice, one dear Native American friend gathers a large group of believers to a mountain sweat lodge for prayers and meditations.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is rich beauty to be found in all the celebrations, and a reason to recognize our common oneness. The point is, that, as a Baha\u2019i am free to, but not bound to, celebrate the holy days of all the religions if I so choose. I acknowledge their validity and value their contributions. The <a href=\"\/bahai-faith\">Baha\u2019i<\/a> teachings unequivocally accept and recognize the founders of all the world\u2019s great Faiths:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-24-font-size\" style=\"font-size:24px;font-weight:normal\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As to the position of Christianity, let it be stated without any hesitation or equivocation that its divine origin is unconditionally acknowledged, that the Sonship and Divinity of Jesus Christ are fearlessly asserted, that the divine inspiration of the Gospel is fully recognized, that the reality of the mystery of the Immaculacy of the Virgin Mary is confessed, and the primacy of Peter, the Prince of the Apostles, is upheld and defended.<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><br \/><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The Founder of the Christian Faith is designated by\u00a0Bah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h\u00a0as the \u201cSpirit of God,\u201d is proclaimed as the One Who \u201cappeared out of the breath of the Holy Ghost,\u201d and is even extolled as the \u201cEssence of the Spirit.\u201d His mother is described as \u201cthat veiled and immortal, that most beauteous, countenance,\u201d and the station of her Son eulogized as a \u201cstation which hath been exalted above the imaginings of all that dwell on earth,\u201d whilst Peter is recognized as one whom God has caused \u201cthe mysteries of wisdom and of utterance to flow out of his mouth<\/strong><\/span><i><strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. &#8211;\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"\/shoghi-effendi\">Shoghi Effendi<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/reference.bahai.org\/en\/t\/se\/PDC\/pdc-28.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Promised Day is Come<\/em>, pp. 109-110.<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So no matter which holidays you observe, what is it that we are really celebrating at this time of year? What spirit is common to all Faiths and all religions? We are all worshiping the same loving God and striving to serve our fellow human beings. This is a season when we can come together to appreciate each joyous celebration in a spirit of the utmost love and unity:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-24-font-size\" style=\"font-size:24px;font-weight:normal\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>O contending peoples and\u00a0kindreds\u00a0of the earth! Set your faces towards unity, and let the radiance of its light shine upon you. Gather ye together, and for the sake of God resolve to root out whatever is the source of contention amongst you. Then will the effulgence of the world\u2019s great Luminary envelop the whole earth, and its inhabitants become the citizens of one city, and the occupants of one and the same throne. &#8211; <\/strong><\/span><a href=\"\/bahaullah\"><strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baha\u2019u\u2019llah<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>,\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/reference.bahai.org\/en\/t\/b\/GWB\/gwb-111.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Gleanings from the Writings of Baha\u2019u\u2019llah<\/em>, p. 217<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless of what your holiday traditions are, this is a wonderful time to acknowledge the customs and celebrations of your neighbors and to join in the true spirit of the season for which every religion prays:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peace on Earth<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s the holiday season; Christmas trees laden with beautiful ornaments, streets lined with twinkling lights and the city decorated with color.
