{"id":74618,"date":"2021-12-17T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-12-17T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bahaiteachings.org\/?p=74618"},"modified":"2021-12-14T10:02:37","modified_gmt":"2021-12-14T18:02:37","slug":"ambassador-humanity-episode-four-vision-racial-equality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bahaiteachings.org\/ambassador-humanity-episode-four-vision-racial-equality\/","title":{"rendered":"Ambassador to Humanity \u2014 Episode Four: A Vision of Racial Equality"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In the dozen years between the dawn of the 20th century and <a href=\"https:\/\/bahaiteachings.org\/abdul-baha\/\">Abdu\u2019l-Baha\u2019s<\/a> 1912 visit to North America, more than a thousand Black women and men were lynched.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During that same period, the Ku Klux Klan had begun to re-establish its reign of violence and terror in the South, and the racist theory of eugenics had come into vogue among intellectuals and academics.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/bahaiteachings.org\/derek-black-why-son-of-klan-leader-denounced-white-nationalism\/\">Derek Black: Why the Son of a Klan Leader Denounced White Nationalism<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Episode four of <em>Ambassador to Humanity<\/em> tells the story of <a href=\"https:\/\/bahaiteachings.org\/what-racism-intervention-look-like\/\">Abdu\u2019l-Baha\u2019s radical and visionary approach<\/a> to the question of race relations in a United States in the grip of systemic and deeply ingrained racism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At a time when the <em>New York Times<\/em> asked \u201cIs it a man or a monkey?\u201d about a Pygmy man from Zaire displayed in a cage at the Bronx Zoo, Abdu\u2019l-Baha carved out a completely revolutionary discourse on race \u2014 with a new set of images and metaphors, recasting racial differences as a source of beauty and strength. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<strong>The world of humanity<\/strong>,\u201d he said, \u201c<strong>is like a garden, and humankind are like the many coloured flowers. In the clustered jewels of the races may the blacks be as sapphires and rubies and the whites as diamonds and pearls. The composite beauty of humanity will be witnessed in their unity and blending.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In every city Abdu\u2019l-Baha visited, he challenged the entrenched racist social conventions of the time, making the desegregation of multiple venues across the country a prerequisite of his talks and speeches.
