To the surprise of many who encountered him in the West, Abdu\u2019l-Baha<\/a> was among the foremost champions of the cause of gender equality<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is well established in history that where woman has not participated in human affairs<\/strong>,\u201d He told<\/a> one audience, \u201cthe outcomes have never attained a state of completion and perfection.<\/strong>\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This episode of Ambassador to Humanity<\/a> <\/em>explores how Abdu\u2019l-Baha consistently promoted the equality of the sexes<\/a> as one of the fundamental teachings of the Baha\u2019i Faith. In his writings, his father Baha\u2019u\u2019llah<\/a> had unequivocally proclaimed the equality of women and men, and Abdu\u2019l-Baha set out to describe the many implications of that equality in his own talks and correspondence.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Famously, Abdu\u2019l-Baha likened men and women to the two wings of a bird. \u201cNot until both wings are equally developed can the bird fly<\/strong>,\u201d he said<\/a>. \u201cShould one wing remain weak, flight is impossible.<\/strong>\u201d He also broke new ground by entrusting tasks to women in predominately male spheres of activity, enabling them to bring their capacities and skills to a wide range of endeavors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abdu\u2019l-Baha\u2019s views on gender equality made front page news in North America and Europe. He inspired gatherings of campaigners for women\u2019s suffrage<\/a>, and thousands more who were committed to social justice. Although women would not get the vote in the United States for almost another decade after Abdu\u2019l-Baha\u2019s visit \u2013 and not for another 16 years in Britain \u2013 Abdu\u2019l-Baha inspired countless women on their march to equality. His dedication to, and insights into, this core Baha\u2019i principle continue to inspire the actions of millions of his admirers today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
